Image: looking to the Rumps on Cornwall’s stunning north coast. The walk to here along the south-west coast path from Polzeath is superb. This point is where Binyon wrote his poem For the Fallen in September 1914, a few weeks after the outbreak of the First World War.
I often have music in my studio, it helps me to stop thinking in words and focus on the paint. The day I heard ‘Of land, sea and sky’ (composer Anthony Payne, in a Proms concert afternoon repeat – thank you BBC) I paused to listen. That evening I decided that I should keep some form of diary – this is the start.
My paintings are mostly about the land, sometimes about the sea – my studio is in a very rural corner of Cornwall, about as far from the sea in Cornwall as you can get – and sky.
