    Notes

Liminal places, where two 'places' meet, we see the the textures and marks on surfaces, erosion of rocks, on moorland tors and coastal cliffs, the strata exposed by time and the elements. From darkness to light, land meeting water, the energy of nature against human action to control and exploit. These are the thresholds, the edges and boundaries.

I'm interested in the traces, the rhythms and marks that I find in these places, and how to bring this into my work, as an integral part of the composition - the layers of colour; allowing the surface colour to break to show the underlying layer; scraping the surface; making a line across the surface, that may move around other lines that form shapes, or responding to the existence of another mass, cutting through it, or changing direction, or pisj=hing pout to the edge of the canvas.
