Van Gogh chose a great variety of motifs from the public garden in from of his home in Arles, in the south of France, and later within the confines of the hospital of St-Paul de Mausole at Saint-Remy-de-Provence. He aimed to convey meaning rather than accuracy, recording nature freely, adjusting compositions and sometimes adding figures.
